This Workshop is for beginners and improvers focusing on techniques for planning your painting, choosing your colour palette and colour mixing with more confidence.
Starting with the foundations on this workshop will be the key to future success and enjoyment with oils.
Materials for painting workshops
Summery of the day
In the morning you will be making small studies in both pencil and then oils which will help to understand the importance of the plan for a painting.
Late morning and throughout the afternoon you’ll be working on your larger piece using your reference photo.
You’ll be learning the method of thin to thick and dark to light with oils to build up your painting with some colour theory along the way.
We’ll break for lunch at 12.30 and tea and coffee will be available throughout the day
I am very happy for you to bring materials you already have as long as you use this list as a rough guide.
Remember an Apron/old shirt
kitchen roll or kitchen cloths for wiping brushes as you paint , baby wipes also handy for clearing up. Some people like to protect hands with surgical gloves it’s totally up to you.
Masking tape handy for sticking your reference to the easel.
Sketch pad and pencil
Brushes
You only need 3/4 brushes or there is an option of one of the sets.
A large Flat or Filbert size 8 or 10
A smaller Flat size 6
1 or 2 small rounds size 2 and/or 4
Palette for your paints or you can use the tear off palette paper clipped to drawing board.

For thinning oils a small bottle of Low odour solvent, 75ml
Steel brush washer with lid and/or dippers for the solvent.

Surface
Paper/ Canvas/ or painting boards
You can work on oil paper a canvas or oil painting board no larger than 16”x12”
Its useful to have some multimedia paper to experiment on as well as your canvas or painting board
Pencil and paper also useful for sketching
Oils
Either traditional or water based are fine
The Winton range is perfect for starting out. The starter pack is good or the colours in the first or second list depending on your confidence.
Basic range suitable for the workshops and beginners
Lemon yellow, Cadmium yellow pale hue, Yellow ochre, Alizarin crimson, Ultramarine blue, Terra Rosa or burnt Sienna, black, titanium white
A Broader range for more confident painters.
Yellow ochre, cadmium yellow pale hue, lemon yellow, permanent alizarin or magenta, cadmium red hue, cadmium orange hue, cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, Burnt sienna or Terra rosa, black or blue/black and titanium white
